Schlafmeile Berlin

Berlin’s Schlafmeile Berlin (literally, “Sleep Mile”) is in the Friedrichshain district of the former East Berlin. The former Eastern parts of the city are now known as the trendiest up-and-coming areas, full of artists, cafes and night clubs. The hostel is owned and operated by a New Zealand transplant to Berlin, although the rest of the staff are all local Berliners.

There are more than 50 beds at Schlafmeile Berlin in three different units. Each unit has its own fully equipped kitchen for guest use, and a common area for guests to relax in with a TV and radio. The dorm style rooms have four, six or eight beds in them, so you will not find any gigantic or overcrowded dorms here. Some of the dorms have en suite bathroom facilities. There are also private apartments (complete with their own kitchens) which sleep up to 10 people. For each bed, the prices vary depending on whether or not you get bed linens or breakfast included.

It is easy to find Schlafmeile Berlin, as the New Zealand restaurant (which is part of the hostel and right next door) has a gigantic Kiwi bird perched over the door. It is in this restaurant where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner at great prices. The hostel’s friendly staff can also direct you to the area’s best restaurants and cafes if you want something different, too.

For a look at the old East Berlin, you cannot beat actually staying in a neighborhood like Friedrichshain, so Schlafmeile Berlin is not only a great hostel but is culturally interesting - and the attentive staff will help you make your entire stay in Berlin culturally interesting, as well!
