Helter Skelter Hostel

Berlin’s Helter Skelter Hostel, once known as the Clubhouse Hostel, is in the city’s Mitte district right in the middle of Berlin. Most of Berlin’s sights are within walking distance – the Brandenburg Gate is probably a ten minute walk, and the famous Checkpoint Charlie is probably a 20 minute walk. If you prefer to save your feet for dancing, you can hop on Berlin’s excellent metro system – there is a metro stop not far from the hostel’s front door.

Helter Skelter Hostel was redesigned in 2005 with backpackers in mind, so the rooms each have individual decor for an added bit of fun. The rooms vary in size from large dorm rooms to five-bed dorms, private rooms with two to four beds, and even some fully equipped apartments if you plan to stay in Berlin for more than a few days. The apartments are ideal if you are traveling as part of a group (or as a family) and want to be able to cook your own meals, too.

Some of the amenities you will find at Helter Skelter Hostel are:

  • Free linens (towels available)
  • Internet access
  • On site bar and night club
  • Luggage storage and security lockers
  • Guest kitchen
  • No lockout and no curfew
  • 24 hour reception and 24 hour check in

The area around the Helter Skelter Hostel is full of great restaurants and bars, but you do not even need to leave the building to find the party – the hostel’s own night club, Kalkscheune, will keep you dancing all night with your friends. For a break from the music, you can also challenge someone to a game of pool in the lounge, which is open 24 hours a day.

The owners of Helter Skelter Hostel wanted to recreate something they felt was fading from the hostel scene – the sense of backpacker adventure that used to be synonymous with the word “hostel.” So when they redesigned their hostel in 2005, they made an effort to make plenty of common areas where travelers can meet and mingle. If you leave Helter Skelter Hostel without making new friends, you were not trying very hard!
